Mission of the organisation

To protect birds, both resident and migratory.

Key Activities

  • Weekend birdwatching outings which take place across the country at a regional level
  • Various projects, including a Migratory Song Birds Campaign
  • Important Bird Areas projects
  • Campaign for the conservation of the Houbara
  • AAO has a joint project with the Ministry of the Environment on the conservation of three important islands: Galite, Zembra and Zembretta
  • The association works closely with local governments in undertaking conservation work on the ground

Recent Achievements

  • Identified a total of 45 IBAs and drafted a national inventory
  • Conducted surveys of waterbirds, Audouin's Gull, Cory's Shearwater and Eleonora's Falcon
  • Produced conservation awareness materials for distribution to schools, forestry personnel and the general public
  • Completed the final draft of Important Bird Areas in Tunisia to be published in 2000. 45 sites have been identified
  • Organised a public awareness campaign against the capture and trade in songbirds. Booklets, posters and pins were distributed in schools and colleges in the majority of the country
  • Organised expeditions to the Islands of La Galite, Zembra, Kerkennah and Djerba
  • Surveyed and monitored 20 IBA sites
