Through our work at BirdLife International we celebrate the diversity of nature and each other. One of our core values is ‘Diverse by Nature’. BirdLife is committed to creating a culture of mutual respect, where every voice is heard and individual differences, cultures, and communities are valued. We believe that everyone can make a difference, and through our Partnership, we seek to provide a voice for those who would otherwise not be heard.

This means that we are committed to creating an environment where everyone feels able to bring their full self to the workplace, from different walks of life– sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic origin, various physical/mental abilities, family structure, socioeconomics, age, nationality, or citizenship, marital, domestic, or civil partnership, sexual orientation, gender identity. We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind, and we do not allow stereotypical thinking to influence our decisions. But more than that, we believe that through diversity, we become stronger together, harnessing the power of many. By listening to and acting on the rich variety of perspectives and experiences we have across our team, we are better able to bring about the changes needed to achieve our goals and act for nature.

Our policies, processes, and benefits are created with these values in mind. Through our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Policy and Action Plan, we will work to pro-actively create the culture and ethos that we aspire to.

Our former CEO Patricia Zurita’s perspective on Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI)

“As the first woman from a developing country to lead a major international conservation organization, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion has a unique meaning to me both personally and professionally.

Personally, I want everyone from diverse backgrounds to have the opportunities that I have fought for and enjoyed throughout my career. Thus, I feel I have a responsibility to raise awareness and act for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion.

I truly believe we are at a crucial point for the planet, and it’s time to act now and take even more urgent steps to save nature. It is my firm belief that successful conservation can only thrive with the support of widely diverse leaders and people. That’s why we are, and we need to be, diverse by nature.
