Scientific evidence drives conservation across the BirdLife Partnership. The launch of our new DataZone website provides unprecedented access to our world-leading bird and nature data.

Information is critical for effective action, especially in the world of conservation. Our dynamic new DataZone platform provides access to our scientific datasets for a wide audience – from birders to citizens, scientists, site-based managers, and global decision-makers.

With its integrated datasets and sophisticated functionality to search and query our data, BirdLife’s DataZone is set to become the go-to resource for researchers and journalists covering bird conservation, biodiversity, and the climate crisis.

Our DataZone integrates information on more than 11,000 species and 13,500 important sites, conservation actions, specific threats and more, meaning that you can access fully integrated data on the following subjects for the first time:

  • Key sites for conservation: Identifying the most crucial places for bird and biodiversity protection
  • Flyways: Mapping global bird migration routes and conservation challenges
  • Country insights: Summaries of biodiversity significance, threats, and conservation progress across 250 nations and territories
  • Threats and solutions: Science-based insights into challenges facing birds and the most effective conservation strategies, underpinned by the latest scientific research

A new Data Explorer allows users to deep-dive into individual factsheets on these topics or download them for use offline. Engaging images, graphics, charts and maps bring the analyses of trends and patterns to life. New profiles present key data for migratory birds across the eight terrestrial and six marine flyways that connect conservation efforts across continents.

Access to the analyses and articles in our flagship State of the World’s Birds reports and our latest scientific papers and publications has also been streamlined, enabling tailored searches. The nature and climate crises mean making this evidence easily accessible online is crucial to our impact.

This vital new resource was made possible by the generous support of the Aage V. Jensen Charity Foundation and the Garfield Weston Foundation.

The datasets contained within the DataZone are at the heart of our truly world-leading science. Scholar GPS ranks BirdLife International as the #1 non-academic institution in the field of Conservation Biology in the UK, and #3 globally, based on our scientific publications.

Discover how the DataZone integrates data on bird species, key conservation sites (including Key Biodiversity Areas and Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas), flyways and science-backed solutions—all in one place.
