Goodbye to Mikkel Larsen – a board member of BirdLife Asia

Mikkel Larsen

Today, we recognise the extraordinary efforts of a true advocate for our planet, Mikkel Larsen, who tragically passed away last week.

Mikkel Larsen was a board member of BirdLife International in Asia. As the former CEO of Climate Impact X, and the first Chief Sustainability Officer for DBS Bank in Singapore, Mikkel advocated for responsible investments for the future of our planet. From its inception in 2021 to 2024 Mikkel led Climate Impact X in Singapore which facilitates the buying and selling of high-quality carbon offsets.

Mikkel served as a leader on sustainability issues by participating on several related councils and committees. Mikkel was passionate about animal rights, wildlife and nature conservation and that made him a natural ally of BirdLife.

“Mikkel was especially drawn to BirdLife because he understood the need for the important role of biodiversity to be elevated in conversations around climate financing.  He also understood the important role played by civil society organizations with a presence on the ground to enable and support climate investments and to ensure they also delivered for nature and people. He understood the effectiveness, relevance and elemental nature of our conservation model even as he embraced the technically complex world of climate financing. At his time of his passing Mikkel was looking to help advise BirdLife on its efforts to conserve forest, wetland and grassland ecosystems.  He reminded me that he was always a friend, confidant and adviser first and only then a board member.  We will miss him.” shares BirdLife’s Asia Regional Director, Vinayagan Dharmarajah.

Mikkel will be greatly missed by everyone at BirdLife International, but his passion and concerns reflect our own and we hope to further his vision for a more sustainable future for all life on our planet through our ongoing work.
