The ultimate gift for the holidays!
Do you want to show your loved ones that you care about them during these holidays but you do not know what could be the perfect gift? Fear no more, the ultimate gift for bird lovers (and those to be) lays before you.
You have the chance to give back to birds!
Our Partners work tirelessly to protect birds, their breeding places, their food sources, and their migration routes but they need support to keep doing what they are doing. Your holiday donation could make a difference for our Partners and birds in Europe and help them to survive.
Saving Steppe Birds
Slovakia’s steppe birds need you! Slovakia’s rare steppe habitats, and the birds that depend on them, are in crisis. Species like the European Roller, Redshank, and Black-tailed Godwit are losing their homes to plowing, habitat destruction, and declining grazing. Yet, in a shocking decision, Slovakia’s Minister of Environment has refused funding for a critical LIFE project to restore 700 hectares of steppe habitats across nine protected bird areas, even claiming, “Slovakia doesn’t have steppes.” Conservation efforts are now at a standstill, and SOS/BirdLife Slovakia need your support to make sure these vital ecosystems survive.
Help to create a Bird Sanctuary Network
Our Portuguese Partner SPEA wants to create nationwide bird sanctuaries to create a patchwork of safe havens throughout Portugal, where farmland and forest-dwelling birds can rest, feed, and breed. At each sanctuary, SPEA experts will identify and monitor the existing bird species and analyse the characteristics of the site, working together with the owners of the land to define and implement bird-friendly measures. These measures could include, for example, creating ponds and water points, replacing invasive plants with native species, growing crop plots for wildlife, or installing nest boxes.
SPEA aims to collect € 30 000 for this project to seed the network with 10 sanctuaries.
Support the #BanLead Campaign
Lead is highly toxic: it has already been banned in Europe from petrol, paint, and pipes because it poses serious health risks. There is no safe level of exposure to lead. Yet, it’s still used extensively in shooting and fishing. Every year, 44,000 tonnes of lead ammunition and fishing weights are released into Europe’s environment. This unseen pollution is poisoning our wildlife, endangering human health, contaminating our water and soil, and putting our pets and livestock at risk.
By donating, you support the team to continue to advocate for the ban of lead and help 92 species of birds that are at risk. You can also sign the petition here: https://banleadnow.com/get-involved/
