BirdLife International is the world’s largest nature conservation partnership. Through our unique local-to-global approach, we deliver high impact and long-term conservation for the benefit of nature and people.

BirdLife International Partners work in some of the most important forest landscapes around the world. We deliver impactful conservation for biodiversity and the climate, and advance nature-positive economic development. The BirdLife International Partnership harnesses the strength of our 112 national organisation Partners through an aligned global strategy.  Working together, we enable the scale-up of local action and influence forest policy, science, and practice at national and global scales. towards the global goals for forests and climate.

Our global forest strategy has three focal areas, imperative to achieve the global forest and climate goals:
Protection of the most important forests through advocating for, managing and supporting forest protected areas, including enabling community management of forest resources.
Tackling the drivers of deforestation through advocacy and engagement with key sectors and institutions, particularly linked to agriculture, to drive sustainable practices, inputting to policy processes to incentivize forest conservation and mitigate climate change.
Restoration of forest landscapes through diverse restoration approaches working with local people to establish connectivity between Key Biodiversity Areas, enhance climate resilience and ecosystem services, and expand nature-based carbon sequestration.

We have prioritized a set flagship tropical forest landscapes covering over 2.6 million hectares of Key Biodiversity Areas. These places are amongst the most important for the survival of endemic and threatened biodiversity, and also have potential to achieve significant impact for climate and human wellbeing. Birdlife and Partners work with local stakeholders in these landscapes to conserve, restore and develop sustainable solutions that will endure in the long-term.

Since 2019, the BirdLife International’s Forests Landscape Sustainability Accelerator, has invested in the people and innovations behind these landscapes.  The Accelerator is designed to build knowledge, provide seed investment, facilitate collaborations and connect Partners to new opportunities. We aim to identify, develop, test and deliver sustainable financing solutions that can ensure conservation and social impact in these flagship landscapes long-term. Our goal is a network of self-sustaining programmes with a ‘bring it all together’ landscape-approach to strategy and funding that continue to protect forests, wildlife, and livelihoods into the future.  More information can be found here: https://www.birdlife.org/sustaining-forests

The Accelerator also acts as the pipeline for a portfolio of carbon, conservation enterprise, PES, and other innovative sustainable financing mechanisms. We are developing a pilot Dashboard to improve measuring and tracking impact of the landscape portfolio, and assessing feasibility for a blended financing mechanism based on these impact measures.

The Forests Programme Officer for Landscape Finance (FPO-LF) leads the Accelerator and supports BirdLife Partners and Secretariat to build and deliver a portfolio of sustainable finance initiatives in landscapes around the world.
