Africa Forest Coordinator
BirdLife International is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced individual for the position of Africa Forest Coordinator. BirdLife International Partners work in forests around the world, incorporating conservation of core areas with threat mitigation strategies at landscape, national and global scales. This work includes “traditional” conservation of, advocating for, managing and supporting forest protected areas as well as supporting community management of forest resources. It also includes engaging in the productive economy to improve practices, inputting to policy processes to incentivize forest conservation and mitigate climate change and contributing to the science of forest conservation. BirdLife International’s Forests Programme aims to link and advance these initiatives. Within this context, the Africa Forest Coordinator’s main responsibility will be to coordinate implementation of BirdLife’s Africa Forests Programme and management of forest conservation projects, particularly in West Africa. He/she will lead on the implementation of Africa’s Forest Flagships Initiative, focussed on enabling and mobilising large-scale funding for forest conservation in the region, strategic stakeholder engagement and providing direct support to Partners’ landscape-scale forest conservation initiatives.
1. Leadership and coordination of BirdLife’s Africa Forests Conservation Programme:
• Lead the development and implementation of a BirdLife Forest Conservation Strategy in Africa.
• Lead development and implementation of a Forest Flagship Initiative for Africa, focused on enabling and mobilising large-scale funding for forest conservation in the region, strategic stakeholder engagement and providing direct support to Partners’ landscape-scale forest conservation initiatives.
• Create a network of technical, government and private sector stakeholders in support of forest conservation, and support Partners to capitalize on this.
• Strengthen links with other BirdLife Africa initiatives and Partners elsewhere in Africa, where practical and advantageous.
• Provide thought-leadership on public-private finance for forest and forest landscapes and around the financial mechanisms that can lead to long-term sustainability for forest landscapes.
2. Management and development of forest conservation projects:
• Provide strategic oversight for large scale forest projects and collaborative work, ensure clarity of roles, responsibilities and functions between BirdLife and Partners, and maintain good working relationships.
• Ensure effective management of existing portfolio of forest conservation projects and ensure timely delivery of high-quality reports and other project deliverables.
• Develop new forest conservation projects as per need to cover priority conservation gaps, and/or co-finance existing ones.
3. Mobilise resources (funds, partnerships and information) for forest conservation in Africa:
• Enhance fundraising drive for forest conservation, including through cultivation and maintenance of relationships with donors and development institutions, and developing of compelling concepts and matching them with funding opportunities, among others.
• Ensure quality control of proposals, and compliance with both donor guidelines and BirdLife’s internal processes.
• Act as BirdLife Africa point person for fundraising on Forest’s conservation.
4. Promote BirdLife’s Africa Forest Conservation achievements:
• Represent BirdLife in international forums and act as the focal person on BirdLife’s Africa Forest Programme.
• Facilitate documentation and dissemination of lessons from forest conservation actions in Africa.
• Any other duties as delegated by the Head of Conservation - Africa
Required skills, experience and qualifications:
• Master’s degree level qualification in Conservation, Forestry, Natural Resources Management, Sustainable Development, Environmental Economics or related field.
• With a proven track record in project development, fundraising and management.
• Significant relevant experience with experience at senior management level in international conservation (with demonstrable experience in Africa) and organisational management.
• Experience in market-based instruments such as voluntary carbon markets, REDD+, PES, conservation trust funds and/or other areas of conservation finance is desirable.
• Experience of engaging with the private sector, including with corporates or commodity value and supply chains.
• Experience in design, implementation and monitoring of complex and multi-stakeholder conservation and/or development projects in different African countries.
• Understanding of key institutions driving forest loss and conservation in Africa, their mandates and opportunity to influence them.
• Experience working with NGOs, government agencies, private sector and community-based organizations
• Ability to act independently.
• Basic financial literacy.
• Ability to write professional articles and give presentations to international audiences.
• Ability to look at the strategic and operational dimensions of issues and plan accordingly.
• Ability to generate innovative ways of doing things, and in the process enhancing the quality of products and efficiency in the use of resources.
• Willingness to travel at short notice when required.
• Word processing, presentations, spreadsheets and database management.
• Language: English. French an added advantage.
• Frequent travel, up to eight weeks per year.

Salary & benefits:
Commensurate with experience and qualifications and in accordance with BirdLife International, Africa Division terms and conditions.
• Gross monthly salary: Dependant on location, skills and experience.
• Length/duration of this position: 2 years, with a possibility of extension, contingent upon performance and resource availability
• Working hours: Full time 40 hours per week
• Date when the job expected to start: 1 May 2021.
