Agriculture
We want to end harmful agricultural practices and policies
The intensification of agriculture is the leading driver of bird population declines worldwide. In Europe alone, farmland populations have plummeted by 60% over the past 40 years. we have lost 60% of farmland birds in just 40 years. At BirdLife, we are determined to reverse this decline.
From promoting sustainable farming practices to empowering consumer choices, we advocate for a radical transformation of our food system. Our vision is clear: a system that provides healthy, environmentally friendly food for everyone while supporting rural communities and protecting nature.
Our work
The Common Agriculture Policy
Did you know that around 55 billion euros annually – one-third of the EU’s total budget – is spent subsidizing farming? The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) is one of the most influential sets of laws in Europe, shaping not only farming practices but also the state of biodiversity and ecosystems.
But in its current form, the CAP locks farmers into an intensive farming system that is wiping out our birds and insects, contributing to climate change, polluting our water, and threatening our long-term food security. At BirdLife, we are committed to reforming this policy to drive a transformation toward agroecology—a system that works in harmony with nature
Together with our Partners, we provide expert guidance to decision-makers to improve national CAP Strategic Plans. We also monitor their implementation across EU countries to ensure they deliver tangible benefits for biodiversity and the climate.
Think twice about pesticides
Pesticides pose serious risks to human health, ecosystems, and wildlife. Moving away from chemical pesticides is crucial for building a sustainable farming system that supports biodiversity and human well-being.
Despite these dangers, European agriculture remains heavily dependent on chemical pesticides. BirdLife is participating in shaping EU policies to reduce their use and and promote nature-based pest management solutions as sustainable alternatives.
Another way to consume
Building a sustainable food system requires more than changing farming practices; it demands a shift in how we consume. At BirdLife, we advocate for fair food systems that benefit farmers, workers, and consumers while respecting planetary boundaries.
Encouraging healthier, environmentally conscious diets is vital for both our food system and to end the unsustainable production practices that harm our planet. Unchecked consumption and demand currently drive unsustainable and intensive production practices. The future of food must prioritise both people and nature.
