Job Profile

Under the guidance of the BirdLife Africa Communications Manager, & Communications Officer, the job holder shall provide communications support to the “Support Programme for the  Preservation of Forest Ecosystems in West Africa (PAPFoR) Project”, working with partners: the Conservation Society of Sierra Leone (CSSL), the Society for Conservation of Nature of Liberia (SCNL), the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the Gola Rainforest Conservation LG (GRC-LG).

The main duty and responsibilities include:

  • Implement the PAPFoR project communications strategy, with particular focus on the implementation and impacts of project activities in the Gola landscape in Sierra Leone and Liberia.
  • Develop and implement annual communications plans as per project cycle, in liaison with the Communications Manager and Officer, project coordinators, Project Manager, Project Supervisor and.
  • Oversee production of a wide range of project communications materials including but not limited to: project stories, press releases, brochures, fliers and infographics, guides, branded products, social media posts and ensuring produced material meet donor requirements.
  • Coordinate and help organize, manage project events including meetings, and workshops in liaison with project coordinators and Project Manager.
  • Oversee curation , including development of a project photography and videography repository,  and ensure these are shared with CSSL, SCNL, RSPB and BirdLife Africa communications focal points in a timely manner for further dissemination.
  • Develop and maintain contact information and relationships with journalists and media outlets (print, TV, radio, web etc.) in Sierra Leone and Liberia to increase visibility of PAPFoR project activities in the media.
  • Assist in building capacity of SCNL and CSSL communications officers through trainings and hands-on work.
  • Produce annual project communications reports, in addition to other duties as delegated by line management

Working relationships

The Communications Consultant shall work closely with BirdLife Africa Communications Team, PAPFor Project Manager and Project Supervisor, and SCNL & CSSL PAPFoR project coordinators, and SCNL,  CSSL and GRC-LG communications officers

Location: Based in Liberia but covering both Sierra Leone and Liberia

Contract duration: The contract length is 6 months (with a renewable option of a further 6 months)

Minimum Qualification and other Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s Degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.

Experience: At least seven years of similar work/consulting experience is required.


  • Excellent written and oral English communication skills and proficiency. Knowledge of other local languages/dialects in the two countries would be an asset.
  • He/she should have advanced working knowledge of MS Office Suite in addition to basic design and layout skills, adept in using Adobe Photoshop, Canva etc.
  • Proven experience in media relations.
  • Attention to details, excellent organizational skills, and ability to deliver quality output with tight deadlines
  • The candidate should be able to work independently – with minimum supervision and guidance from supervisors.
  • Prior communications experience in the conservation sector is an added advantage

Expectations: The consultant is expected to ensure maximum visibility of the PAPFor project and assisting in building capacity of partners comms focal points.  The gross  renumeration for this consultancy  position  is  USD 1300 per month.
