Together for Birds and People
More than 100 organisations around the world have realised the value of working together as part of the BirdLife Partnership, united by a common desire to conserve the world's birds and their habitats. The development of the BirdLife International Network relies on the shared values which have brought together independent bird and wildlife conservation organisations under the BirdLife International banner.
International programmes, such as the IBA programme, lead to conservation initiatives which address local issues and are directed by local people as part of nationally agreed programmes. These in turn form part of regional, continental and global conservation initiatives.
International festivals and various campaigns and other events are organised at a national or international level. For example, WORLD BIRDWATCH when over 180,000 people in more than 90 countries go birdwatching during one weekend, and the NTT-ME World Bird Count event during October when birdwatchers all over the world observe more than 6,000 bird species. These events raise the profile of bird conservation and build an understanding of its impact towards the protection of the world's biodiversity. The benefits of this are enormous as greater interest from the general public translates into pressure for action on decision makers at a local, national and international level.
BirdLife International Partners from across the world are able to come together to learn from each other in a unique way. The capacity of individual Partners is built up through a programme of training workshops in which organisations, large and small, participate on an equal basis.
The BirdLife International Network has the ability to share both human and financial resources, which allows the Partnership to target scarce resources more effectively.
BirdLife International strives to make the world a better place for birds and in so doing aims to improve the quality of life for people. The needs of birds and people are basically the same - a healthy environment in which any use of natural resources is sustainable.
This is how BirdLife is working together for birds and people...
