Following the BirdLife International Partnership's work with both the CMS and the Bern Conventions on the risks of electrocution and collision with powerlines, work has been ongoing to improve the bird safety standards of powerlines in Europe.
A 2011 Conference in Budapest adopted a Declaration and recommendations for further actions. Because of this, the European Commission has initiated the development of EC Guidelines on powerlines and Natura 2000.
BirdLife has made progress in establishing dialogue with the energy sector and promoting the issue at EU level.
It is important to ensure the adoption of a Resolution by CMS adopting and seeking implementation of the recent review and guidelines by AEWA to take this progress to the flyway level.
