Mission of the organisation

BCST advances the knowledge of birds through birdwatching, education, and field projects.

Key Activities

Birdwatching and nature education camps and workshops
Education brochures and other materials
Exhibitions bird surveys and information gathering
Habitat protection and species conservation projects
Donations of funds and equipment to hard-pressed Protected Area staff
Lobbying government for better laws and improved conservation action on the ground
Publicising threats to birds and their habitats in the media
Supplying information to and working closely with Thai government agencies and international conservation bodies on bird conservation matters in Thailand and the Asia region

Recent Achievements

Received the "Co-operation of the Year Award for Developing and Promoting Tourism" from the Tourism Authority of Thailand
Protested against the illegal hunting of Red Avadavats, the illegal land use at Ban Nai Chang National Reserve Forest and the building of Lumsapung reservoir
Conducted a bird and biodiversity survey of Khao Nor Chuchi Lowland Forest Project Supervised a youth camp for raising conservation awareness amongst schoolchildren
Organised a workshop-seminar, sponsored by the Oriental Bird Club, to highlight the plight of Gurney's Pitta at its only site in Thailand. The seminar was attended by staff from television, newspapers and magazines, local people from the area where Gurney's Pittas are found and representatives from the local Wildlife Division, including the chief of Khao Nor Chuchi Wildlife Sanctuary
Made major progress with the IBA programme: a second workshop was held and 145 IBAs have now been identified
Continued to operate a full programme of indoor and outdoor meetings and published a monthly bulletin
Held a joint workshop with Wetlands International for NGO and governmental representatives on the importance of the Gulf of Thailand for shorebirds
Ran three student camps and a training course for Thai birdwatchers
19 teams took part in a Bird Race, sponsored by Swarovski Optik
