Mission of the organisation

To preserve the nature of Suriname by conducting research, providing nature education and organizing nature tourism activities in the nature reserves and parks of Suriname.

Key Activities

Education and public awareness

  • Publishing of booklets and posters on nature
  • Educational and logistic support to the Wildlife Rangers (a youth club)
  • Multi-media awareness activities (e.g. TV spots)

Research

  • Monitoring of wildlife and conservation’s status (mainly in Nature Park)
  • Stimulating research by local institutes
  • Facilitating research by foreign researchers / institutes

Tourism

  • Creating tourism infrastructure in the NR's
  • Specialized tour operating to the protected areas, e.g. for volunteers

Management for nature conservation

  • Comprehensive management of the Brownsberg Nature Park

Advocacy

  • Involving decision makers in awareness activities
  • Collaborating with local communities for nature conservation
  • Lobbying for establishment / effective protection of Nature Reserves

Fundraising

  • Own income generated via tourism activities and services offered to foreign researchers
  • Additional funds generated by submitting various projects

Recent Achievements

  • Helped to build the infrastructure at three protected areas. Tourist and research lodges were built or upgraded, and birdwatching tours and sustainable ecotourism packages were developed and implemented
  • Held a successful WORLD BIRDWATCH '99 event near Suriname's international airport. On the same day, a new documentary on the Guianan Cock-of-the-Rock was broadcast nationwide
  • Began compiling bird inventories in protected areas with the results for four areas published online
