Mission of the organisation
Conservation of wild birds and their habitats and more broadly, the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable use of natural resources.
Key Activities
- IBA Programme
- Practical activities: the management of biotopes (wet meadows, nesting islands, nest boxes)
- Conservation research: gathering data and preparing management plans for globally threatened bird species(Corn Crake, Imperial Eagle, Ferrugineous Duck)
- Development of membership and branches active at a local level
- Environmental education and public awareness-building for bird conservation: lectures, World Birdwatch, Spring Arrivals, Bird of the Year, Site of the Year
- Environmental policy: Ramsar wetlands conservation and management, national campaigns on hot issues, comments on new legislation
Recent Achievements
- Surveyed Scops Owl and Hoopoe populations in southern Slovakian. Censused pairs of Corncrake, and undertook management work to improve Corncrake breeding conditions at specified localities. A Corncrake conservation action plan was prepared for the Ministry of the Environment
- Peregrine Falcon and Saker Falcon nests safeguarded and surveyed at certain localities. The Slovak bird crime working group was created and helped to implement CITES legislation into Slovak law
- Co-operated with five agricultural farms on the protection of meadow habitats
- Restored sandy banks for Bee-eater colonies on the lower Hron River
- Leased 154.6 ha of wet conifer forest for the next 26 years, to protect original habitat in the Orava region
- Repaired a dyke and restored the pre-existing water regime to 120 ha of wet meadow habitat. Co-operated in the preparation of a conservation plan for Senné Reserve
- Organised the first Slovak Bird Fair, which over a 1,000 people attended
