Mission of the organisation
To promote conservation (wise use) and management of natural resources for sustainable development in Sierra Leone.
Key Activities
- Public awareness and environmental education campaigns
- Resource centre/sharing information/networking on conservation and the environment
- Advocacy and support for sustainable development
- Research/survey and management interventions to protect species, sites, habitats and people particularly in forest and wetlands
- Collaboration/networking with other conservation environmental organisations and agencies
Recent Achievements
- Continued with IBA survey work and completed the final draft of the country's IBA directory
- Distributed conservation awareness materials to secondary schools in three major cities
- Set up a Picathartes research committee
- Compiled a wetland conservation action plan for the country
- Established a national body - the National Liaison committee - comprising government, NGO and local community representatives to implement the Sierra Leone Biodiversity Action Programme
- Produced a national wetland conservation action plan
- Lobbied government policy makers, resulting in Sierra Leone signing the Ramsar convention
- Produced an IBA poster and leaflets on Sierra Leone
- Established an environmental education centre at Regent near Freetown
