Mission of the organisation

To promote conservation (wise use) and management of natural resources for sustainable development in Sierra Leone.

Key Activities

  • Public awareness and environmental education campaigns
  • Resource centre/sharing information/networking on conservation and the environment
  • Advocacy and support for sustainable development
  • Research/survey and management interventions to protect species, sites, habitats and people particularly in forest and wetlands
  • Collaboration/networking with other conservation environmental organisations and agencies

Recent Achievements

  • Continued with IBA survey work and completed the final draft of the country's IBA directory
  • Distributed conservation awareness materials to secondary schools in three major cities
  • Set up a Picathartes research committee
  • Compiled a wetland conservation action plan for the country
  • Established a national body - the National Liaison committee - comprising government, NGO and local community representatives to implement the Sierra Leone Biodiversity Action Programme
  • Produced a national wetland conservation action plan
  • Lobbied government policy makers, resulting in Sierra Leone signing the Ramsar convention
  • Produced an IBA poster and leaflets on Sierra Leone
  • Established an environmental education centre at Regent near Freetown
