Mission of the organisation

To protect birds and their habitats, (directly within bye-laws on diversity of birds) and to contribute to ecological education in the field of conservation.

Key Activities

  • Conservation of endangered species (Red Data Book of Russia and Globally Threatened), Important Bird Areas (and federal and local key ornithological sites)
  • Programme, activities with Russian public such as Spring Bird Days, Bird of the Year programme, Birdwatch, Winter Bird Counts, publications to promote birding in Russia, seminars and conferences related to bird conservation and studies

Recent Achievements

  • Increased membership to 2,000, thanks to support for membership recruitment from VBN and funds from the Dutch Government's Matra Programme
  • Continued to create regional branches. By the end of the year, branches had been established in 49 administrative regions of Russia, with their activities covering more than 70% of Russian territory
  • Received a one-year grant from the Institute of Sustainable Development, Russia (ROLL) for the construction of nest platforms for endangered raptor species in three regions of European Russia
  • Finalised a project on the value of IBAs in Russia for migratory birds and published the results as a book
  • Published, with VBN's financial support, results of a project on the Imperial Eagle
