Mission of the organisation

BirdLife Malta’s mission is the protection of wild birds and their habitats.

  • Developed management plans & signed contract with government on our two nature reserves

  • The establishment of a governmental Monitoring Board to monitor the hunting situation and to step up law enforcement
  • The re-introduction of the Barn Owl
  • Communicated BirdLife’s achievements and approached key audiences through various campaigns
  • Participated in various fairs

  • Launch the Important Bird Area Book in Malta to the media, political bodies and governmental agencies

 

    Education

  • Implemented one-year long educational campaign: ‘One World'
  • Continued to organise educational classes for schools in Ghadira Nature Reserve
  • Implemented an adoption scheme which not only educates the public about sea-birds but helps to raise money for their protection

 

    Advocacy and Lobbying

  • Continue to put pressure on authorities to enforce current laws and lobby for improvements with the authorities
  • Established a co-operative relationship with the Administrative Law Enforcement Unit
  • Enforcement of law in Buskett, an important bird area for migratory birds
  • Organised a birds of prey camp in September to market bird-watching in Malta, and to help deter and control illegal hunting
  • Strengthen capacity and effectiveness of BirdLife Malta by joining BirdLife International’s campaigns, increasing the society’s membership and funding for projects

    Recent Achievements

    • Schools' visiting programme to the Ghadira Nature Reserve was run during spring 2001.
    • A survey of all bird-trapping sites was carried out in the Maltese Islands, with the support of BirdLife International
    • Opened BirdLife Malta’s Is-Simar Nature Reserve for daily school visits. A teacher was seconded from the Education Department to develop an educational programme for visiting schoolchildren
    • Organised a visit to reggio Calabria, Italy, to enable Maltese police officers to see how their Italian counterparts deal with illegal hunting of birds
    • Constructed the first phase of a visitors’ centre at Is-Simar Nature reserve. The construction was funded by membership support, donations, and from Dansk Ornitologisk Forening (BirdLife in Denmark)
    • Organised training courses on law enforcement on illegal hunting and the bird trade for members of the Administrative Law Enforcement, the Armed Forces of Malta, Maltese Customs, and the Environment Protection Department
    • Launched the Dinja Wahda, (One World) year-long schools' competition in environmental education. Dinja Wahda III consists of 18 green activities, ranging from setting up of bird tables to organising a school recycling campaign. This year's project was sponsored by local firms and by Nos Oiseaux of Switzerland, BirdLife International, and SOF (BirdLife Partner in Sweden)
    • Organised and hosted BirdLife Malta’s third International Raptor Camp based in Buskett, the only wooded area on the island, and now a bird sanctuary.
    • BirdLife Malta's Website won the Non-profit and Voluntary Website category in the DataStream Malta Web Awards for 2001
