Mission of the organisation

  • To protect IBAs, globally threatened species and priority habitats in Greece
  • To advocate sustainable development
  • To provide advice to government authorities
  • To promote interest in the conservation of wild birds through public awareness programmes

Key Activities

  • Important Bird Areas campaigns, advocating site conservation

  • Organising public events with the purpose of promoting the enjoyment of birds to a wide range of people
  • Continued with the conservation program of the Bearded Vulture in mainland Greece and the island of Crete, and the conservation program of the White-headed Duck on Vistonis lake
  • Began the conservation program of five raptor species
  • Confirmed the IBA Programme
  • Implementated management plans for Evrota Delta and Gialova Lagoon in South Greece, and Aliki "Psili ammos" on the island of Samos
  • Continuation of Information Centre in Athens and Amvrakikos

Recent Achievements

  • Carried on implementing the Action Plans for Audouin's Gull, Pygmy Cormorant, Lesser White-fronted Goose, Dalmatian Pelican and Slender-billed Curlew
  • Continued the IBA Programme. More than 190 localities have now been identified
  • Ran three information centres in Athens, Thessaloniki and Amvrakikos
  • Implemented conservation action plans for Audouin's Gull, Pygmy Cormorant, Lesser White-fronted Goose, Dalmatian Pelican, White-headed Duck and Lammergeier. Co-ordinated production of an action plan for Eleonora's Falcon and assisted in the preparation of four other plans
  • Completed the IBA review programme, with 196 sites identified
  • Intervened at national, regional and local levels for the protection of several SPAs and IBAs and the creation of new SPAs
  • Advocated for the protection and management of SPAs and IBAs
  • Ran five information centres in cities around Greece
  • Published a guide called The impact of work and activities on birds and their habitats. Managing habitats for birds
