Mission of the organisation
To ensure the conservation and protection of wildlife in the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) for future generations by providing advice, education and practical action.
Key Activities
- Seabird Monitoring Programme: population census, trends, diet analysis and tracking of penguin species
- Albatross & Petrel Programme: population census, trends, tracking, demography, key site management plans and fisheries interaction of ACAP species - Black-browed Albatross, Southern Giant Petrel and White-chinned Petrel
- Seabirds-at-sea Surveys: distribution and vulnerability atlases for Falkland Islands (Malvinas) and South Georgia
- Falkland Islands National Plan of Action to reduce seabird mortality in fisheries. Establishment of action plans for all fisheries (trawl, jigging, longline)
- Community Education Programme: environmental resource packs and teaching modules for school and volunteer survey and data recording
- Invertebrate Programme: Cataloguing insect biodiversity
- Botanical Surveys: habitat classification, plant atlas, priority species action plans, FI red list compilation
- National Herbarium
- Tourism Management: monitor impacts, site guide for cruise industry, specific site guidelines & signage, establish wardens at sites
- Habitat Restoration & Invasives: Rat eradications, invasive plant species control, tussac replanting
- Environmental advice, assistance & presentations to government, military, landowners and public
Recent Achievements
- Developed and produced a mitigation device for use on trawlers to directly reduce the numbers of petrels killed by the fishing fleet
- Produced a National Plan of Action (Seabirds) to reduce mortality in fisheries around the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) and worked to have this adopted by the Falkland Islands Government, which happened in March 2004
- Produced and published the Guide to Insects of the Falkland Islands
- Eradicated rats from 12 offshore islands, providing safe havens for ground nesting endemic birds
- Retrieved the first data from geo-locators fitted to Black-browed Albatrosses, providing an insight into their winter migratory patterns
- Published A Visitors Guide to the Falklands
