Mission of the organisation
- Promoting knowledge of birds and support for nature protection
- Protecting birds and improving their habitats nationally and internationally
Key Activities
- Mediating a positive attitude towards wild birds and nature among the general public
- Lobbying for bird protection on a national, regional and international level
- Compiling data on all bird species breeding in or migrating through Denmark, including detailed information on the country's 50 rarest and most threatened breeding species
- Supervising and maintaining over 200 IBAs and bird reserves in Denmark

Recent Achievements
- Published Danmarks Fugleliv 2005, which is a summary of DOF’s knowledge based on 30 years of data combined with political recommendations on actions for all the various nature types of Denmark
- In 2004 DOF was appointed partner in a government programme to improve wetland conditions and conditions for raptors by the Minister of Environmental Issues
- Published Truede og sjældne ynglefugle I Danmark 1998-2003, which is the result of five years work compiling data on the 50 rarest and most threatened breeding species in Denmark, carried out by a network of volunteers (with a summary in English)
- Published Birds of Denmark, which includes full species status assessments
- Obtained funding from the Danish Government for a joint three-year project with WCST (BirdLife in Tanzania) aimed at capacity building and for an integrated development and conservation project in the Uluguru Mountains
