Mission of the organisation

To provide a professional centre for the effective planning and integrated management of the National System of Protected Areas in Cuba (SNAP).

Key Activities

  • Identify areas in need of protection
  • Certify Management Plans
  • Advocate legislation required for SNAP
  • Promote International collaboration in the development of conservation projects
  • Implementation of seven projects given international support.  The most important of these being the UNEP-GEF funs “Strengthening of National System of Protected Areas”
  • Working on the publications Cuban IBAs
  • Two projects in the IBA sites of Turquino-Bayamesa and Zapata Swamp.

Recent Achievements

  • Establishment of protected areas legislation, with the first law of Protected Areas in Cuba, in 1999
  • Declaration of the first 45 protected areas legally recognized by the Cuban government  between 2002 and 2008 and the “implementation” of several protected areas through the development of necessary infrastructure and administrative mechanisms
  • Protected areas recognised internationally including six Ramsar sites, two World Heritage Sites and two Biosphere Reserves.
  • In 2001 CNAP received funding from BBW and BirdLife International to develop the IBA program through the Eastern Cuba Project “Saving a Unique Caribbean Wilderness”
