Mission of the organisation

To advance the understanding, appreciation and conservation of wild birds and their habitats, in Canada and elsewhere, through studies that engage the skills, enthusiasm and support of its members, volunteers, staff and the interested public.

Key Activities

  • Monitoring bird populations through a variety of volunteer-based national and regional programs Coordination of the Canadian Migration Monitoring Network
  • Directed research on issues of conservation interest
  • Conservation and stewardship projects especially for species at risk
  • Data management and interpretation, including for IBAs in Canada
  • Training in monitoring techniques, especially for bird banding
  • Education and communication

 

Recent Achievements:

  • Publication of a Breeding Bird Atlas for Ontario
  • Leadership on Breeding bird Atlas projects currently underway in the Maritimes and British Columbia
  • Analysis of trends in birds as shown from data from 20 migration monitoring stations across Canada
  • Banding of the 750,000 bird in the 48th season at Long Point bird Observatory
  • Maintenance of many monitoring projects involving some 20,000 volunteer observers each year
  • Launch of an electronic Avian Conservation Ecology with our partners, the Society for Canadian Ornithologists
  • Establishment of new offices and programs in Prairie Canada
  • Training of 80-100 people per year in monitoring techniques, including many from Latin America
  • Operating Budget of $3.75 million
