BirdLife Secretariat finances in 2010

The Birdlife Secretariat had a positive year despite the pressures of the economic conditions around us. Total income increased by 10% from the previous year generating a small surplus. There was a key focus on carefully managing expenditure, while investing in our fundraising effort. We maintained a clear focus on supporting the growth and sustainability of the global Partnership of national organisations, which makes Birdlife’s structure, governance and approach to conservation so unique and effective. More funds were disbursed to national Partner organisations than ever before.

The Secretariat’s own £11m budget is just a small fraction (less than 5%) of that of the entire Partnership. It is set up with its principal offices dedicated to supporting the conservation programmes of the Partnership across Africa, Americas, Asia, Europe, Middle East and the Pacific, with a global coordination centre in the UK. Increased focus was on developing cross regional conservation programmes and campaigns to protect species and sites, promote local empowerment, develop policy and advocacy activities for key habitats like forests, wetlands, grasslands, farmland and oceans, climate change and conservation financing.
