Help BirdLife International Prevent Extinctions

Today, one in eight of the world’s 10,000 bird species is threatened with extinction. These globally threatened birds are destined to be lost forever unless targeted conservation action is quickly put in place to protect them and reduce the threats they face.

You can be a part of the recovery by acting today and supporting The BirdLife Preventing Extinctions Programme - a global conservation initiative designed to help turn the tide on the species extinction crisis.

You can help in several ways.

The BirdLife Preventing Extinctions Programme is already making a significant difference; spearheading conservation action, awareness and funding that is helping to prevent the otherwise inevitable extinction of globally threatened species. Our priority is to focus conservation efforts on the 190 species, like Sociable Lapwing, that we classify as Critically Endangered – the highest threat category in the IUCN Red list.

Central to The BirdLife Preventing Extinctions Programme is the development of two new communities;

BirdLife Species Guardians - local experts who take the lead in conserving threatened species in their country and…

BirdLife Species Champions – Organisations and individuals who raise awareness for and fund the the vital conservation that is so urgently required.

The programme has become established quickly and many new Species Champions – like Swarovski Optik and RSPB for the Sociable Lapwing – have already provided funds to help Species Guardians oversee conservation action for more than 60 of the worlds most threatened birds.

You can find out about our other BirdLife Species Champions here.
