Our last update on Dinara’s location was in early December when she was at the Great Rann of Kutch just inside the Pakistan border. Since then we know she remained in the area until at least mid December but is likely to have flown over the border, travelling about 250k further south east, to her current location during the last week of December. This follows an anticipated pattern as there have been several previous records of birds found wintering in Gujarat.
Dinara has played a very important role in helping us understand the Eastern flyway that was long-suspected but previously unconfirmed. Her Amazing Journey has enabled us to now fully document the route taken by a Sociable Lapwing from its breeding grounds in Eastern Kazakhstan to its wintering grounds in India for the first time.
We are grateful for a further record of Sociable Lapwings wintering nearby sent to us by Giri Cavale who recorded six birds at the Little Rann of Kutch, Gujarat, India on December 14th 2010. Mr. Cavale has also published an excellent photograph of one of these birds which Facebook users can view by clicking here.
