After more than a month without word, Dinara sprung a double surprise today when we received not only a new transmission with details of her current location but also confirmation that she is in southern Uzbekistan!
The last we heard from Dinara was way back on September 1st when she had yet to start her migration, was still present in Central Kazakhstan and remained very close to her breeding site near Lake Tengiz.
The news of her new location today near the town of Dekhkanabad, just north of the Turkmenistan border is very intriguing. To date all Sociable Lapwings tracked from breeding sites in central Kazakhstan have taken a westerly route through Russia before heading south through Turkey and the Middle East. Dinara’s location in southern Uzbekistan means she has clearly taken an entirely different route south which is keeping us guessing as to just where she might be headed. While at a latitude similar to Erzhan in eastern Turkey and Raushan in northern Pakistan is she now going to head east to India, west to the Sudan or maybe contine south to a previously unknown wintering ground elsewhere?
We hope to soon bring you more news, so be sure to stay tuned for her next update…
