Community conservation project wins award in Oz

Birds Australia (BirdLife Partner) has won the 'Natural Environment' category of the Victorian Coastal Awards for its Beach Nesting Birds project, which has recruited local communities and land managers to improve the breeding success of the Near Threatened Hooded Plover.

Researchers from the Victorian Wader Study Group - a special interest group of Birds Australia [BirdLife Partner] - have just recaptured a Ruddy Turnstone which has completed a 27,000 km round trip migration for the second time.

Spoon-billed Sandpiper is one of the world's strangest-looking birds and certainly the weirdest wader. It is a small bird with, as its name suggests, a spoon-shaped bill. The species is listed as Critically Endangered by BirdLife International because it has an extremely small population, which is getting smaller This means that it is at real risk from extinction in the next few years.
