The worst fears of shorebird experts in Australia were realised recently when it became clear that reclamation of the extensive mudflats at Saemangeum in the Yellow Sea had caused alarming declines in populations of migratory waders which use the area as a stopover on their annual pilgrimage to Australia. Without these mudflats, the waders had nowhere to stop over and feed on invertebrates to refuel for their arduous journey.

BirdLife Zimbabwe Celebrates International Day for Biodiversity

On 21 May 2010 Zimbabwe commemorated the International Day for Biodiversity. Six schools made it to the national debate competition, which was used to celebrate the day. Two of the schools in the Bird Awareness Programme - Mabvuku High and Prince Edward Boys High participated in the competition.

Please help to strengthen bird tourism in Iberia

In 2008, the BirdLife Partners in Spain (SEO/BirdLife) and Portugal (SPEA) started a project to improve ornithological tourism in relation to the Natura 2000 network. The project will focus on Spain and Portugal but will have relevance to the Natura 2000 network as a whole. The BirdLife Secretariat is supporting this project.

Timber logging concession in Mutulanganga IBA

Two companies has been awarded a timber logging concession in Mutulanganga IBA. Mutulanganga IBA is one of the areas in which the Zambian Ornithological Society (ZOS / BirdLife Partner) is working and was selected as an IBA on the basis of holding Globally Threatened Species and Biome-restricted Species.
