Three charismatic southern African birds heading for extinction

Three of South Africa’s flagship bird species have moved closer to extinction, according to BirdLife on behalf of the 2010 IUCN Red List. The African Penguin’s status has changed from Vulnerable in the 2009 category to Endangered, the Ludwig’s Bustard from Least Concern to Endangered and the Southern Ground Hornbill from Least Concern to Vulnerable.

World Migratory Bird Day Celebration Promoting Botswana’s Diverse Culture

BirdLife Botswana (BirdLife Partner) in collaboration with Department of Wildlife and National Parks celebrated World Migratory Bird Day with more than five hundred school children, forty-eight teachers and over fifty Mogobane community members on Saturday 29th May 2010 at Mogobane village kgotla. The theme for the celebration was Migratory Birds: Promoting Cultural Diversity in Botswana.

BirdLife Zimbabwe Celebrates International Day for Biodiversity

On 21 May 2010 Zimbabwe commemorated the International Day for Biodiversity. Six schools made it to the national debate competition, which was used to celebrate the day. Two of the schools in the Bird Awareness Programme - Mabvuku High and Prince Edward Boys High participated in the competition.

Two companies has been awarded a timber logging concession in Mutulanganga IBA. Mutulanganga IBA is one of the areas in which the Zambian Ornithological Society (ZOS / BirdLife Partner) is working and was selected as an IBA on the basis of holding Globally Threatened Species and Biome-restricted Species.

A First for Seychelles - Cousin celebrates IBA branding

Cousin Island Special Reserve has become the first IBA - Important Bird Area - branded site in the Seychelles and the Western Indian Ocean region. The IBA branding states publicly that Cousin island is of outstanding value for bird conservation. IBAs are sites of global importance for birds and their conservation, defined and listed by BirdLife International, the world authority on birds.
