MME tests measures to halt illegal hunting of birds

Using technology to protect biodiversity

The BirdLife partners in France, Ireland, Portugal, Spain and the UK, are deploying unprecedented actions to protect the marine environment, through the project FAME (Future of the Atlantic Marine Environment, Interreg Programme 2010-2012). Amongst other, they have been tagging seabirds with mini-cameras, which recorded wonderful images.

Scientists highlight carbon risk from Biomass energy

On 29 March 2012, BirdLife Europe, the European Environmental Bureau and FERN organized a breakfast event about correct carbon accounting. Several top scientists, amongst whom a member of the Scientific Committee of the European Environment Agency, told the audience that burning biomass for energy could release more carbon emissions than it saves.

On explicit request of the main farmers unions, the department taking care of health and consumers issues within the European Commission (DG SANCO), has proposed to dismantle a European bio- safety regime by removing the obligation on countries to contain the spread of a highly destructive maize pest, the Western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera.

Annually, the Buff-breasted Sandpiper and American Golden Plover undertake some of the longest journeys of any migratory birds in the world, from their breeding grounds in the tundra of North America to wintering sites in the grasslands of Southern South America. Aves Uruguay (BirdLife in Uruguay) and partners have secured approximately 3000 hectares for both species of shorebirds through good management practices of the natural grasslands.
