BirdLife International condemns violent act against its Maltese Partner

19-02-2008

BirdLife International strongly condemns the arson attack on Sunday February 17, on three cars belonging to BirdLife Malta volunteers. The attack completely destroyed the three vehicles. Police have informed BirdLife Malta that the incident was most probably a criminal act. BirdLife regrets the ongoing conflict about spring hunting, over which Malta has recently been taken to the European Court of Justice. BirdLife hopes that Malta will soon accept the ‘rules of the game’ that apply in any EU Member State and which have been designed to ensure the sustainability of hunting.

"We strongly condemn this needless act of violence and offer as always our full support to our Maltese Partner. Spring hunting is not an option in the EU and we hope this will be accepted by everyone soon" —Dr. Clairie Papazoglou, Head of the European Division, BirdLife International

Dr. Clairie Papazoglou, Head of the European Division of BirdLife International stated: “We strongly condemn this needless act of violence and offer as always our full support to our Maltese Partner. Spring hunting is not an option in the EU and we hope this will be accepted by everyone soon. BirdLife Malta has shown great commitment in their actions to stop spring hunting and renew the interest of the Maltese people in the beauty of migratory birds.” BirdLife calls on the Maltese government to urgently identify and bring to justice the responsible persons for this act and to declare the end of spring hunting once and for all.
