Tree campaign sees LPO branch out

05-11-2007

LPO (BirdLife in France) are inviting citizens from all over France to explore and discover trees in their cities and villages. The focus lies on trees as ‘mini-ecosystems’, providing a home to birds and other animals by offering shelter and food sources.

The events form part of a nationwide campaign entitled ‘Aux arbres, citoyens’, this year organised for the first time by LPO (Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux) alongside FCPN (Fédération des Clubs Connaître et Protéger la nature). Both organisations invite the public to enjoy and pay special attention to trees present in cities and villages.

‘Aux arbres, citoyens’ is designed to raise awareness for biodiversity in and around trees. The campaign has been set up to highlight the importance of trees in urban areas; both in terms of biodiversity and wellbeing.

Through various activities the campaign works to bring citizens closer to the trees that surround them and also seeks to make people aware of the need to protect trees as part of their heritage.

Several festivities and tree-planting activities will be organised during the last weekend of November. LPO and others are inviting people to take part in conferences and exhibitions, organising guided tours and ‘Adopt a tree’ campaigns.

In its first year, ‘Aux arbres, citoyens’ aroused a great deal of interest in France. As a result, the campaign has grown. This year, several guided tours have been organised and guides to discover trees have been distributed among interested citizens.

The campaign culminates in the weekend of November 24-25 and will be followed-up also in Belgium and in Benin.
