An international competition to gather photos of all of the world’s 189 Critically Endangered birds has begun.

Birdwatchers that may have captured one or more of these rare birds on camera are being asked to submit their best photos for use in the upcoming Rare Birds Yearbook, being published in association with BirdLife International.

As well as a comprehensive directory of all of the world’s Critically Endangered birds, Rare Birds Yearbook (released October 2007) will have a number of specially written feature articles on issues relating to threatened birds, such as migration, rare bird sites and taxonomy.

Photos are to be a crucial ingredient of the book: “Encounters with the planet’s most threatened birds are often fleeting, and photos can be just as rare,” said Ade Long, BirdLife’s Head of Communications. “Yet photos play an important part in raising awareness of their plight and this is a key reason for publishing the Rare Birds Yearbook.”

Winners will have their photos published in the book, and will be in with a chance of getting their hands on a number of prizes including binoculars, a pocket weather station and copies of BirdLife’s ‘Threatened Birds of the World’.

Budding rare bird photographers have until 15 July 2007 to submit their photos.
