New guide to Panama City's birds

31-03-2004

Panama Audubon Society (BirdLife in Panama) have published English and Spanish guides to the common birds of Panama City.

The book covers 50 of the commonest birds to be seen around Panama's capital city. It is divided into habitat types, highlighting which birds can be seen in wetland, urban and forest areas. The guide also contains useful chapters on how to attract birds to gardens, as well as where to go around the city to see birds.

The original Spanish version, ¿Qué vuela ahí?, was written by the acclaimed Panama conservationist Jorge Ventocilla and translated into English as A Guide to the Common Birds of Panama City.

"We hope this guide will be an effective tool for environmental education. The challenge for the reader is to become knowledgeable about urban birds and to become defenders of the environment." —Loyda Sanchez & Norita Scott-Pezet, Panama Audubon Society

Packed full of excellent photos and illustrations, it is hoped that these books will encourage residents of (and visitors to) this expanding city to more fully appreciate its great biological diversity and bird life.

The co-publication with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute was possible due to the support of US Forest Service, Golden Gate Audubon Society, BirdLife International and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation.
