Male Satanic Eared-Nightjar captured on film

01-03-2000

The Satanic Eared-Nightjar Eurostopodus diabolicus (Vulnerable) is endemic to Sulawesi and is a very poorly-known species. Until recently it was only known from the type-specimen, a female collected on the Minahassa peninsula, although there have been a few recent sightings in central Sulawesi, in Lore Lindu National Park. In August 1999, a birdwatching tour group to the island came across a male of the species, the first ever to be seen in the daytime. The bird was sexed on the basis of its white wing patches, a feature that the female specimen lacked so had never previously been recorded.
