1. About the job
The Conservation Partnership Manager will lead BirdLife’s engagement with Heidelberg Cement and its Biodiversity Strategy by ensuring smooth management of the actions described in the agreed workplan. This person will monitor the implementation of these actions and ensure adequate reporting. They will strengthen BirdLife International’s ability to engage and cooperate with business organisations who share a similar vision to BirdLife’s for sustainability in the use of natural resources and thereby increase the impact of BirdLife’s conservation work.
 
2. About you
You are efficient, highly organized, with experience and understanding of values and constraints in both NGOs and Businesses, in particular the extractive industry. You are able to deal with sensitive and confidential issues, with an ability and passion for mediation between different legitimate interests. You are a proactive and inclusive team player. You have knowledge of nature conservation and understand the importance of engaging with businesses who seek genuine improvement of their environmental practices. You have experience of working in international networks of non-profit organisations and within complex teams.
 
3. About BirdLife Europe and Central Asia
BirdLife Europe & Central Asia (BLI ECA) is the European Division of BirdLife International, and is one of the six BirdLife regional offices around the world. BirdLife Europe leads and supports the European and Central Asia Partnership of BirdLife International, which consists of 48 independent, grassroots Civil Society Organisations with over 2 million members.
Together with BirdLife International, present in 121 countries through a Partnership of autonomous Civil Society Organisations, we protect wild birds, their habitats and global biodiversity, by working with people towards sustainability in the use of natural resources. We are the global authority on the status of bird species, with unparalleled technical expertise in bird and biodiversity assessment, and capacity to link local conservation activities and groups to domestic and international policy and conservation work. 
You will join a dynamic team of professionals based in Brussels and Cambridge who together support the BirdLife Partnership in Europe and Central Asia to protect nature and birds, through policy, science, conservation measures, organisational support, helping them to increase the visibility of the BirdLife Partnership work and raise the needed funds. 
 
4. Key responsibilities
The job holder’s main responsibilities will be to: 
a) Manage the BirdLife International and Heidelberg Cement partnership and the implementation of the agreed work plan for 2018-2020.
b) Support Heidelberg Cement in strengthening their leadership role in the building materials industry on biodiversity management and to support HC 2030 Sustainability Commitments. 
c) Lead on development of local and regional programmes for action, engaging with HC operations and countries as well as BirdLife Partners to initiate collaborative project development. 
d) Manage a Partnership Project Fund which is critical to initiate and facilitate collaborative action at sites (between BirdLife Partners and HC business units).
e) Work with BirdLife’s and Heidelberg Cement’s Communication teams to effectively present the Partnership to internal and external audiences.
f) Seek opportunities for enhancing the conservation status of important sites and species at Heidelberg Cement sites through improved environmental management practices, including impact avoidance, mitigation, rehabilitation and closure planning. 
g) Manage the Heidelberg Cement Partnership Assistant and cooperate with the BirdLife Regional offices staff whose responsibilities cover corporate engagement in general, and Heidelberg Cement partnership in particular.
h) Organise and lead on the content preparation and follow up on the BirdLife-Heidelberg Cement Steering Committee meetings.
i) Work with the BirdLife Policy team and the Heidelberg Cement Public Affairs team to carry our regular Policy Dialogue meetings around topics of mutual interest and potential for cooperation.
Other tasks
j) To support the Conservation Unit by participating at relevant meetings, as required 
k) To participate, in collaboration with other colleagues, in joint conservation fundraising bids
l) To help design and deliver successful campaigns, projects and publications aiming to achieve BirdLife’s conservation and policy objectives
 
5. Qualifications required:
REQUIREMENTS KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES:
  • Minimum General Education Bachelors degree, or equivalent experience, in a relevant scientific or environmental subject. 
Job Specific Education/ Qualification:
  • Masters degree or higher in a relevant subject, or equivalent demonstrable skills and experience gained in project management. PhD in restoration topic desirable.
Job Specific Knowledge:
  • Good understanding of Ecosystem restoration principles and more specifically on the current methods targeting biodiversity recoveries while sustaining livelihoods at degraded areas.
  • Good general knowledge and authoritative manner about main threats affecting biodiversity and how to mitigate this.
  • Familiarity with most relevant biodiversity and environmental EU and non-EU laws, conventions and instruments.
Experience:
  • Proven experience working with the corporate sector in a critical but productive manner. 
  • Experience working with large-scale excavation, cement, building materials or aggregate materials corporates highly desirable.
  • Experience working alongside members of the Cement Sustainability Intiative, or similar corporate alliances working towards biodiversity recoveries desirable.
  • Proven experience managing or implementing multiannual and international projects is essential. 
  • Proven experience of building rapport with, and acquiring information from, large/diverse/dispersed networks of collaborators and producing high quality reports while meeting deadlines.
  • Experience in managing teams and/or coordinating specialist groups highly desirable.
Management & organisational skills:
  • Very well organised and able to manage pressure, coordinating a wide range of concurrent activities, prioritising workload effectively to meet deadlines. 
  • Self-motivation to act independently, sometimes with minimal supervision, but also to work collaboratively in a team spread across several locations.
  • Excellent concentration and attention to detail, with the ability to undertake repetitive tasks accurately and consistently.
  • Ability to line manage a small team. 

Communications skills:

  • Ability to forge and maintain partnerships across a multidisciplinary group. Diplomacy, sensitivity and confidence to resolve potential conflicts and manage relationships to achieve successful project outcomes is essential.
  • Ability to explain technical issues in an understandable way and to persuade different audiences to take legitimate concerns into account. 
  • Ability to network well and cultivate good relationships with collaborators from a wide range of cultural backgrounds. 
  • Proven skills in critically assessing and synthesising information, and in producing accurate and concise written summaries.
Creativity & initiative:
  • Ambition to explore and develop new approaches within the European & Central Asian Marine Programme, and to help shape its future development.
  • Ability to pursue new and unfamiliar challenges, work independently and devise innovative solutions to novel challenges.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to respond to changing circumstances.
Computer Literacy:
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
  • Familiarity (and ideally some practical experience) dealing with scientific databases.
Languages:
  • High level of fluency in English (and preferably other European languages). 
  • Ability to avoid jargon and use clear, simple language when required.
Travel requirements:
  • Willingness and ability to travel, typically on short (1-3 day) project-related trips.

  • Genuine interest in and commitment to the environment, bird conservation, the NGO sector and civil society.
 
6. Employment conditions:
Location: Brussels (Belgium) or Cambridge (UK). Final decision on location will be based on the applicant´s profile.
This is a one-year contract, with the possibility of being extended afterwards
Salary and benefits according to BirdLife standards and commensurate with experience.
