Assistant Project Manager - São Tomé and Príncipe 

BirdLife International is seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and experienced individual for the position of Assistant Project Manager in São Tomé and Príncipe for Biodiversity and Ecosystems Project. The main responsibilities will be to:
i. Provide assistance in management for effective delivery of the EU/ECOFAC6 funded project aimed at improving the protection of endangered biodiversity and ecosystems of the Ôbo Natural Parks of São Tomé and Príncipe and their buffer zones, and lead on project activities on Príncipe island;
ii. Support the Project Manager in fundraising and building strategic alliances and reputation for sustained biodiversity and ecosystems conservation actions in São Tomé and Príncipe, with a focus on Príncipe Island.
 
Responsibilities
 
1. Assist in Project Management:
• Assist project manager in supervision and direction for efficient and effective delivery of the three main products of the EU/ECOFAC6 project in Príncipe
  These relate to: 
    o Coordination of the socio-economic and sectorial activities – leading with government institutions on problems identification and resolution, involving partners from Local Community to Regional Government
    o Development and implementation of effective Protected Areas (PA) management systems – in compliance with Príncipe Natural Park of Ôbo and Regional Government strategies, secure the sustainable and effective management of the Park
    o Engagement of communities in sustainable management of natural resources – in collaboration with project staff, partners and in compliance with Regional strategy, develop a constructive panel of activities to support sustainable community development         and develop community conservation capacities
• Collaborate with Príncipe Trust to secure ECOFAC6 project field operations in Príncipe Island
• Regularly report on activities on Príncipe Island, maintaining a day-to-day communication with BirdLife central office in São Tomé
• Provide support in Monitoring and Evaluation of project
• Contribute to drafting and delivery in a timely manner, high quality reports and other project deliverables with project partners and consultants and in line with donor requirements
• Provide assistance in overseeing financial management and ensure appropriate budgetary control
• Support Project Manager to facilitate the development and manage implementation of annual work plans
 
2. Staff and Office management:
• Support Project Manager leading and manage staff in the Principe Project office in line with BirdLife HR policy
• Support Project Manager to manage overall operations of the Project Office in Príncipe in compliance with BirdLife office procedures
• Assist in providing guidance, technical and administrative support and leadership to project staff and project partners and consultants
• In liaison with protected area management in Principe, ensure establishment and efficient running of project logistical operations in Principe
 
 
 
3. Support to strategic relations:
• Support Project Manager to cultivate relationships with donors and build strategic partnerships for purposes of resources mobilization for biodiversity conservation in São Tomé and Príncipe, with a focus to Príncipe Island
• Support Project Manager to coordinate integration of BirdLife’s projects in the conservation of forest landscapes of São Tomé and Príncipe, with a focus to Príncipe Island
• Support Project Manager to lead and manage relationship with donor institutions and development entities, with a focus to Príncipe Island
• Support Project Manager to explore synergies with other conservation actions in São Tomé and Príncipe, with a focus to Príncipe Island
• Support Project Manager to foster collaborations that will enhance project delivery and visibility, with a focus to Príncipe Island
 
4. Fundraising:
• Support Project Manager to fundraise to leverage financial support for and expand BirdLife’s conservation activities in São Tomé and Príncipe
 
5. Image and Reputation:
• Support Project Manager to create awareness and project visibility, and facilitate dissemination project results and lessons
• Support Project Manager to raise BirdLife’s profile in São Tomé and Príncipe
• Support Project Manager to promote and safeguard BirdLife’s reputation and credibility
 
6. Other:
• Any other duties as delegated by your Line Manager
 
 
Required skills, experience and qualifications:  
• BSc (or higher), and knowledge of biodiversity conservation, natural resource management, ecology, ecosystem services and their practical application
• MSc will be an advantage, esp. in conservation / development related fields. Eco-tourism knowledge and advocacy skills will be considered as an advantage
• Interest in and understanding of conservation and development issues
• A proven track record of relevant work experience in project management/support, including administration, organisation, reporting, and communications
• High motivation, desire to achieve; attention to detail, excellent organisational skills, and ability to work to high standards with tight deadlines. Team worker
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Good analytical skills required
• Flexibility and ability to work independently
• Competent computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office Suite
• Good project and financial management skills
• Ability to set work priorities, organise activities, meet deadlines and monitor projects
• Oral and written fluency in Portuguese, professional competencies in English 
• This position will be based in Principé Island with frequent travels to Sao Tome Island
• Knowledge of local languages in São Tomé and Príncipe is an advantage

Salary & benefits:
Commensurate with experience and qualifications and in accordance with BirdLife International, Africa Division terms and conditions
• Gross monthly salary: Euros 800 – 980  
• Length/duration of this position: 2 year contract - renewable
• Working hours: Full time 40 hours per week
• Date when the job expected to start: 1 October 2018
