Pacific Parrots: How can I help?

Parrot habitat in the Marquesas islands

BirdLife are asking for help as efforts are put in place to stop the looming extinction of several small parrot species in the Pacific – Kuhl’s (Rimatara) Lorikeet, Ultramarine Lorikeet and Uvea Parakeet. The global population of each rare parrot is concentrated on only one or few islands, which makes them extremely vulnerable to extinction.
We urgently need your help if these endangered small parrots and their threatened island habitats are to be saved. There is much to do and very limited time to do it in. Fortunately, we have already started the process but we need your assistance to carry the work forward.
With your support, the BirdLife International Partnership will be enabled to:
- Translocate Kuhl’s (Rimatara) Lorikeets from Rimatara in French Polynesia to rat-free Atiu in the Southern Cook Islands.
- Train local organizations in the techniques of removing rats so we can achieve similar results on other suitable islands - the BirdLife Regional office in the Pacific will work closely with local organizations, sharing materials, techniques and staff.
- Reintroduce other threatened birds on suitable islands once rats have been eradicated.
- Strengthen prevention measures against the invasion of black rats on other islands which are the last refuge to endangered parrots and other species.
- Co-ordinate work on rat eradication and other programs with the many governments and civil societies of the island nations.
The global population of each rare parrot is concentrated on only one or few islands, which makes them extremely vulnerable to extinction, but you can help...
