Klages’s Antwren is found in Roraima, Amazonas and Pará, Brazil. The species is listed as Near Threatened, approaching the criteria for B1ab(iii). It is known from a small range and is restricted to a specialised forest habitat that is under threat from logging and encroachment. However, the range is not yet severely fragmented or restricted to few locations. The population size has not been quantified but it is described as fairly common to common. The species’s population trend is unknown, although it is suspected to be decreasing in line with rates of habitat loss and degradation. The extent of occurrence (EOO) is estimated at 11,800 km2 and the species is estimated to have 11-100 locations.
In the Brazilian Red List assessment for birds (MMA 2014) this species is listed as Vulnerable under A3c. The species is predicted to lose 30-59% of its habitat by 2020 due to agriculture, deforestation and hydroelectric dam construction. Owing to a loss of habitat the species is predicted to undergo a future population decline of >30% in three generations (15.3 years). The species’s assessment on the Brazilian Red List can be accessed here.
Up-to-date information is requested on the species’s population size reduction and predicted future habitat loss. Confirmation that the future population decline is likely to be greater than 30% may qualify the species for VU under criterion A3c. Comments on the proposed uplisting are welcome.
