Sumichrast’s Wren Hylorchilus sumichrasti is restricted to c.12 sites in west-central Veracruz, north Oaxaca and extreme east Puebla, south Mexico, and is currently listed as Near Threatened under criteria B1a+b(iii); C2a(i).

Its Extent of Occurrence (EOO) is estimated at less than 5,000 km2 and it has a moderately small population, estimated at 20,000-49,999 individuals, both of which are possibly in decline owing to increasing habitat loss and degradation; its population, however, is not considered to be severely fragmented or restricted to a few locations. The species habitat would be considered to be severely fragmented if over 50% was in patches too small to support viable populations. With an EOO estimated at 997 km2, the species’s population is likely to have been overestimated, and might actually number fewer than 10,000 mature individuals, and potentially fewer than 2,500 mature individuals. If this is the case, the species could qualify as Vulnerable or Endangered under the C2 criterion, depending on the number of birds in the largest sub-population and the maximum proportion of all mature individuals in a single sub-population.

Up-to-date information is sought on the likely population size and structure, and the level of habitat fragmentation within this species’s range.
