COPA-COGECA: COVID-19 will cause food shortages in Europe

FACTS:

  • Europe does not risk food shortages

  • 88 million tonnes of food is wasted in the EU every year

 

Europêche: Fishers should be able to carry over more than 10% of their fishing quotas into next year to make up for lost fish this year. 

FACTS:

  • Despite COVID 19, the fisheries sector has continued to operate

  • Europe’s fish stocks are heavily depleted and require much more time to show a hint of recovery 

  • ‘Fishing more’ next year would further push fish populations towards collapse

 

Business Europe: Climate and environmental regulations are “non-essential” and should be postponed due to COVID-19.

FACTS:

  • Our survival depends on climate and environmental regulations

  • Science says we have no time for more delays

  • The first three months of 2020 were the second-hottest on record since 1880

 

European Plastics Converters : The single-use plastic ban should be postponed in Europe because the coronavirus requires us to use more single-use plastic. 

FACTS:

  • There is no such requirement

  • The single-use plastics ban does not apply to medical products such as masks and gloves

  • Single-use products made of more sustainable materials such as bamboo or paper are clear alternatives
