Mission of the organisation

To work towards the study and the conservation of wild birds and their habitats by promoting sustainable development for the benefit of the future generations.

Key Activities

  • Conservation of threatened species, e.g. Azores bullfinch/priolo, Deserta’s petrel
  • Monitoring and promotion of the Portuguese IBA network, including marine sites
  • Conservation of steppe birds and promoting a sustainable agriculture
  • Monitoring of Portuguese bird populations (atlas, common bird census, Xmas and New Year census, coastal birds in winter)
  • Educational projects and campaigns
  • Publications on ornithology (Airo and Anuário Ornitológico)

Recent Achievements

  • Downgrading the conservation status of the Azores bullfinch/priolo
  • Designation of IBA’s as Natura 2000 sites
  • Autumn festival of birdwatching in Sagres to be organised annualy
  • VIII Congress of Ornithology to be held in March 2014 (Almada, Portugal)
  • Establishment of a nature reserve in Corvo, Azores, for seabirds
  • Restoration of over 300 hectares of native habitats of the Azores: laurel forest, peatland and islets
  • Campaign for halting the clearance of tropical forest in Sao Tome
  • Decreasing the impact of electric powerlines on birds
