BirdLife Netherlands launches collaboration with the Dutch Golf Federation
The programme targets golf club managers and aims to raise awareness of sustainable bird habitat development on golf courses. The management of a golf course requires not only attention to the playing quality but also to care for nature. Joost Luiten, the top golf player in the Netherlands, is the ambassador of the programme. At the press conference he spoke about his own caddy, who is a devout birder.
Under the theme ‘Golfers love birdies' a link is created between golfers and birdwatchers through public actions. The programme was launched in connection with KLM Open, a golf tournament that took place off the sand dunes in lovely Zandvoort. The coastal town attracts both birders and golfers to its spectacular seaside nature.
The expected results of the cooperation are:
- Awareness among golf clubs, golfers and especially the management and boards of the clubs about the environmental impact but even more about the chances of proper management for nature.
Together BirdLife Netherlands and the Dutch Golf Federation we will develop a publication for the golf courses with practical advice how to improve the courses for birds and nature. In addition, all kinds of events and communication activities will take place to let golfers enjoy birds and nature on the golf course. On the following day BirdLife Europe spoke about the shared interests and opportunities for cooperation at a workshop organised by the Dutch Turfgrass Research Foundation.
