Key topics for reaching the EU 2020 Biodiversity Target in Malta
- Species protection: Wherein conservation action through LIFE funded initiatives have looked into the conservation and research of priority species such as Yelkouan Shearwater, Cory’s Shearwater and, Storm petrel, the problem of illegal hunting in Malta is still at large, with poor enforcement and lack of political will to deal with this constant threat to resident and migratory bird species.
- Site protection: Though Malta has a considerable part of its land territory designated as Natura 2000 sites, very few marine areas have been granted Natura 2000 status. Malta has to date no Marine SPAs, and will be in a position to designate its first SPAs from the results of two LIFE funded projects on seabirds.
