Report 2012
Key topics for reaching the EU 2020 Biodiversity Target in Italy
In Italy site protection is still insufficient. Frequently, plans, projects and activities within the Natura 2000 network are carried out without appropriate assessment under Art. 6 of the Habitats Directive and without respecting the principle of prevention. Unsuitable mitigation and compensatory measures are commonplace. The management plans and the conservation measures, when existing, establish mild rules that are not effective for Natura 2000 management.
Thanks to the activities of LIPU and other Environmental NGOs, in 2011 the SPA/SCI “Pantani della Sicilia Sud-Orientale” was made a Reserve, in which hunting is forbidden. The site is very important for breeding, migration and wintering of several species listed in Annex I of the Birds Directive.
