Key topics for reaching the EU 2020 Biodiversity Target in Austria
- Species protection: There has been good progress in protection for several species that are critically endangered at national level. For example the Great Bustard has increased tenfold since the implementation of a protection program more than 20 years ago. Also several species of large birds of prey (Imperial Eagle, White-tailed Eagle) are increasing and have been for more than a decade targets of specifically focused species protection programs.
- Degradation: A good percentage of Natura 2000-sites (and other protected areas) are suffering from degradation through intensification of land use (mostly by forestry), changes in water regimes and subsequent changes in habitat structure or bad management practices (e.g. intensification of agricultural management of wet and dry grassland). In most cases, there are insufficient funds to reverse the current situation.
