Facts
  1. The terrestrial Natura 2000 network covers 21% of the total area of Italy and its marine protected areas make up 17.4% of its total territorial waters.
  2. 15.6 % of the species in Italy cannot be found anywhere else; 15 % of the vascular flora in Italy is threatened with extinction; 21% of the utilised agricultural areas present in Italy are of high nature value.
  3. Globally, Italy ranks 12th among the countries with the highest levels of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, responsible for 1.51 % of overall emissions generated from fossil fuels, mainly due to inefficient energy use and road transport.
