Thanks to a LIFE project entitled Important Bird Areas for seabirds (marine IBAs) in Spain (2004-2009), SEO/BirdLife achieved that the government has proposed the marine Natura 2000 based exclusively on the directory published with the information gathered during this LIFE project, and developed the methodological framework that would set the basis for marine IBA identification worldwide, particularly regarding the less studied offshore areas.
Since 2011 SEO/BirdLife is carried out a campaign against the illegal hunting of migratory birds in Spain. It is focused on catching birds with nets, the “parany”, and illegal hunting of pigeons and shearwaters.
Thanks to this campaign, SEO/BirdLife has achieved different objectives such a sincreased public awareness of the problem, with over 1800 complaints filed by individual citizens. Some courts have issued rulings that consider it proven that this type of hunting is a crime, using methods of mass and indiscriminate hunting. Further work is needed to ensure that all local politicians accept the need for legality and proper law enforcement.
