In 2011 good progress was made towards improving the overlap between Natura 2000 sites and IBAs, as boundaries of a number of protected sites were extended. However, a few significant gaps remain. At least four terrestrial (inland) IBAs still have between 200 and 2000 hectares left outside Natura 2000 network. |
| Conservation & management |
Down |
Management plans for Natura 2000 sites have been gradually developed over the last decade with good overall quality and well established procedures. The individual quality of the plans is highly variable, most have not been updated or evaluated since their production, and in many cases (except for particular projects like LIFE, covering some aspects for a limited time) management plans remain shelved documents with low uptake and little impact on species or habitats. |
| Financing |
 |
Limited financial support for management originates mostly from EU instruments like rural development funding and LIFE, with most sites lacking efficiently targeted actions and activities for achieving specific species, or habitat based goals. Prioritised Action Frameworks are a new instrument, with no information readily available on progress of their elaboration so far. |
